自然醒 Day

The worst part of my day was having to take a damn crowded 67 back. Tuition got cancelled so i left KK a little later. Gosh i should swear that i wont do that again!
Anyway, i only have 3 days left for me to make the mistake, which should be qt simple not to repeat ya?

Anyway, it was an awful feeling having strangers so close to you that u can feel them breathing down ur neck. I dont know why i felt it so bad today when i've been on countless packed public transports. Perhaps it's just bus 67 or its only today that people have exceptionally smaller personal space. In the end, i got off at Kallang to take a train and then change bus again.

Sounds like quite a lot of transfers but i was so happy to see my bus 67 getting stuck in the terrible Geylang jam and my MRT just zoom pass :) yay

On a whole i quite like today... I started the day on a good note with me 自然醒-ing at 6.20am!

Also right, i was very happy to see Wenhui feeling better :) Yay

Hope the week will be a good one for everyone!

Adding on...

On my way to church today, i thought of 3 other things i might buy with $1000.

9. Memory pillow! I was surprised by how well i slept at my aunt's place and i suspect it is the memory pillow tt didnt leave me with a neck ache :) As sleep is becoming priceless, we should make the best of what little we get right?

Photobucket

10. Asus Eee PC an ultra-compact notebook with a 7-inch screen that weighs 2.03 pounds. It's attractive to me cos of it's size, weight and affordability. Of course, if i think rationally, the hard disk space and ram is limited. Anyway, good things usually doesnt come complete without a good price. I read from cnet that new ultramobile CPUs are coming soon.. so hopefully there will be many more laptops like these!

Photobucket

11. KITCHEN AID!!! I dont think i need to explain why, but maybe i will get one in green.

I chanced upon these highlighted verses in my bible. It's worthy of some thinking and reflection.

Photobucket

1 Corinthians 13
4Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

We should ask ourselves if we have done the above

Lessons Today

I learnt today that things i write here may be interpreted differently. But should it stop me from typing what is truly on my mind?

The next time ur friend is upset, try beliving, understanding, empathising, listening and cheering him/her up to see if it works. I had a revelation on Monday that these 5 things could possibly be the most important :)

I also learnt today that if we cant make something better, we shouldn't make it worse. Status quo is better than a step back.

On an interesting note, before i left palm service centre, the staff who also served me ystdy said to me,"GOOD LUCK TO YOU GIRL!"

GOOD LUCK has so much meaning... I hope my dear treo will last me this time! :)
If it wishes to break down, PLEASE do so before May 11 :)

Cross ur fingers for me!

Half a Boy

What would u buy if you have $1000 now?

I think i might
1. Find a replacement for my cranky cd player (perhaps i should get a mp3 player tt can be charged and play with speakers or join the ipod club? Burning new cds with new connoction of songs just seems too environmentally unfriendly stimes. My current 5 year old mp player cant be connected to AC and i cant use it to play music in my room:(!

2. I've been toying with the idea of getting a laser printer for some time. Because my brother inkjet printer ink consumption is crazy and it is super fussy. This printer refuses to print if ONE of the four colours is "depleted", can u imagine if u havent stocked up on ink and u run out of ONE colour at night? The ink catridges always still has ink when they've been declared empty too :( Laser printer should be faster and more fuss-free! I wonder if $1000 can get a me a duplex laser printer. I would be so happy not having to flip my papers for printing double-sided.

3. I might get a new phone. Treo is an awesome phone, but i'm not very lucky with it. I think getting a faulty replacement unit is the ultimate joke. hai

4. I might get a good bag, something that will last and designed for comfortable carrying. I've been getting shoulder ache far too often despite starting to carry my textbk in my hands and not in my bag. I think i should enroll myself to back sch like a/prof chia. This is occupational hazzard isnt it?

Surprisingly, i realised i have not listed new clothes which my girl friends has been telling me they need. Will that be what most girls want to spend on?

If the list goes on, i dont see clothes still :)

5. $1000 should be sufficient for a short holiday to somewhere near

6. Get a mini LCD tv for my room cos my TV broke down?

7. Custom make a shelf for my room with an odd measurement of remaining floor space?

Seven is one of my favourite numbers and i shall stop here.

I WISH i started my Saturday better. I shouldnt be blogging abt useless things like this, waiting for palm to process my request for replacement unit and thinking about how stimes people are really hard to understand.
:( NOTHING here should be taken personally.

EDIT: On second thoughts.. i think i'd want to treat my parents to sth awesome. It should have made it to the top 7 list. I think i owe my parents so much :))

a new yay

i watched season 4 episode 12 of grey's anatomy!:)

Pendulum

I cant decide if my day's been a good one cos i suspect there were equal no. of good and bad things :S

YAY: I got to meet ryan, weixiang and eat my mian can can
BOO: I had to send my phone to Funan by 7 pm and i thought i was going to be late
YAY:Bus 95 didnt have to make a single stop along the way to the MRT
BOO: There was a bad jam just before the MRT
YAY: The train came shortly after i arrived at the platform
BOO: I was still 15 mins late when i was at Funan
YAY: I decided to try my luck and OMG palm service ctr was still open!
BOO: My shoulder started to ache from all the hurrying with my heavy bag, so i decided to walk back to cityhall MRT, perhaps head home.
YAY: I decided walked around the newly opened basement of raffles city and saw the much talkd abt j.co donuts. There was a queue longer than donut factory! I also saw chocolate galore in the cocoa tree. It was like heaven u know :)
BOO: I only checked my new phone as instructed by the staff (1)SMS (2)Make a call. On my way home, i discovered that i have to be unlucky enough to be issued a phone with faulty speaker!!!!!!!! OMG

I need sth to yay about now :( Please

Schokolade

I'm now having an incapacitating headache despite having a gcs 3 afternoon in hope to sleep it away. I think it's migraine since it is characteristically throbbing, but this headache i am having is not one-sided. According to my sunflower paeds textbk, symptoms of tension-type and migraine headache often overlap cos they're part of the same pathophysiological continuum. Whatever type it is, i hope it'll subside soon!

I suspect that i've been holding up a subclinical infection for some time. Am i afebrile cos i've been taking paracetamol? It just feel a little neither here nor there sometimes and i am so tempted to give up the fight to fall sick once and for all :)

Anyway, i've decided to type this post cos i realised despite the name of this blog, i have not dedicated a post solely to chocolate :)

Y'know, i know of people who say they're 'allergic' to chocolate. They tell me that they get a bad headache when they take chocolate. Dont u think it's super unfortunate? Anyway, i dont have much of a liking for sweet things, but CHOCOLATE is one big exception :) If i could bring things to heaven by burying it with me in my coffin, chocolate's definitely on the list:)

Anyway, what chocolates do i like?

Photobucket

Photobucket

Ritter Sport
My recent favorites are these!
I almost always have a stash cos my mom likes it too. I will ration it and eat 1 mini-square a day if i can resist the temptation.
Amongst the so many flavours, i like strawberry joghurt, plain joghurt, butter biscuit, cornflakes, hazelnut the most. I havent tried all of them though :)

Photobucket

I rmbr Wiener Nougat fondly as 'the chocolate with the dancing couple' cos the first time i ate it was when i was very very small! I'm not sure how many of u realised that every first of the month, SCDF will play this siren at 12 pm sharp. My dad was in the team to study the system in europe and he spent his remaining pocket money ALL on chocolate :) Can u imagine how wonderful it was when he opened his luggageful of chocolates filled to the brim :):)

Wiener Nougat is definitely one of my all time favourite. Unfortunately, they're hard to come by :( I've only eaten it 3 times in my lifetime.

Photobucket

Produced by the same chocolate factory Fazer is this geisha chocolate Photobucket Kendrick sent me. It has made it to my list of favourites :) The name is quite odd.. why geisha? But i love the hazelnut filling :) Yum

Now that i mentioned Hazelnut. Hazelnut's my favourite nut. On ryantouragency's Europe trip, Nutella was our staple! :)
Photobucket
If u havent realised, it's not just a chocolate spread, it's a hazelnut spread too :)

Ferror Rocher Who doesnt love Ferror rocher? I especially heart the whole hazel nut swimming in the hazelnut filling i the centre :)
Photobucket
It's interesting how a few imitations can be found in the supermarket and if u try them, they're not even close to the real ones! :)
I love Ferror Rocher :)

Actually i first got acquainted to ritter sport in Germany when i went there for exchange. They had lots of funky flavours i never saw in sg. It is also in Germany that i found out abt milka! Milka chocolates are not bad too, but some are too sweet for me. So i usually stick to the usual, nougat, hazelnut and i also like their strawberry yoghurt and biscuit.
Photobucket

I think i brought a lot home both when i was in sec 3 and in M1 europe trip. When i was in sec 3, German mark was still in use and each block of chocolate only cost S$0.80!!!! How not to bring a lot back? :)

Before i returned home from my german exchange programme, my host's grandparents gave me this
Photobucket
Chocolates cannot go wrong with hazelnuts, but if u read the box, there is caramel. This is stimes too sweet and sticky for me, depending on mood :) But it's not too bad.

Toblerone
Photobucket
I like toblerone for it's smoothness and perhaps the nougat too.
If u realise, hazelnut and nougat seems to be a recurring theme :) I think i like these 2 combination with chocolate the most :)

Photobucket

|Lindt| I'm actually a nut person. I like hazelnut, almond, brazil nut, cashew and macademia! I like this lindt chocolate for the almond suspended in almond filling :)

There are definitely a lot more chocolate i've tried and like a lot which i cannot rmbr to feature here. At least i should have convinced u that i really like chocolate!

Y'know i love chocolate so much that i did it for my german project tt's equivalent to a fyp project. I guess it is a little bit more interesting to talk abt than tourism, politics and history. Unfortunately, i hope it's not too kiddy! But if u think abt it, chocolate has tourism, politics and history!!!

Alright... i shall end with this pic i found on flickr.
Photobucket
So green!

Apparently it's m&m with mint. I hope to see it soon in Singapore! :)

Interesting Dream

Last night i dreamt of my pri sch Indian teacher. She invited me to her housewarming party and it turned out that her new house is in Sentosa!
Her house was gorgeous, with the pretty exterior and interior design and had most of the rooms overlooking the coast. She also had a very long indoor pool spanning the length of several big rooms!

I woke up and thought about why i had this dream. It's interesting that i do not even know how she's doing and perhaps i am even fearful to find out. How would u feel when a someone u really like died of old age and u only found out very long aft it has happened? Would u blame urself for not keeping in touch?

Interestingly, i had a second dream tt also took place in Sentosa. Wenhui and Gab were rollar blading with pippin and Valerie and I were choosing nice confectionary/pastry from a german backery. I decided on sth sugar-frosted for gabriel and sth shaped of a dog for wenhui. I cant rmbr what val bought but she did buy a lot for andrew, deborah, her cat and herself! :) We also decided on a HUGE cookie for both marc and jeremy.

I think i like my new cg a lot :)

Update

argh.. i cant believe i spent the whole evening trying to solve my phone problem (and it is still not solved). I was told to update to windows mobile 6 to improve my phone battery life.

I've been rather reluctant cos i'm skeptical abt the possiblity of it solving my problem cos how likely is a sudden plunge in battery life a/w the operating system which i have been using all along?

Maybe i'm wrong la.. cos there are pple who are better with computers tell me tt perhaps wm6 is more energy conserving and perhaps wm5 has a faulty battery indicator etc.

But the bigger prob now is my phone is super cranky. I cant even make calls cos it doesnt detect singtel and the screen keeps freezing.

I am officially phoneless now until palm replies my email. I may try to use my old nokia phone tmr.. but it's really funny how i keep trying to touch to screen!

I hate it u know when sth i love so much disappoints me :(

Hope my treo will be back on form soon.

^%$#@!

i hate it when my electronic devices give me prob :(

匆匆

Do spend some time reading this :)
(i can imagine yang would... since he's the only friend i know who blogs in chinese)

1st Week

I must say my first week of Paeds went by rather quickly... Perhaps it's partly cos we organised dinner for an exchange student 2 nights in a row.. and by the time i got home, i'd hit straight to bed right aft a shower :)

I'm glad that Abu the exchange student really like local food. C'mon everything is so cheap for him! :) Imagine being able to divide everything by three! He told us he might plan a short holiday to Bangkok before he returns to UK. Can u imagine how cheap things will be for him???

Day One - Banana leaf at Little India
Photobucket

Photobucket

Abu made us eat with our hands.. To be fair, Sheryl actually tried to make him eat the fish eye of the curry fish head :) But he didnt of cos.. it's qt an awful thing to most people, including me!

On an interesting note, do u know Chinese has the highest incident of fishbone stuck in throat. Any ideas why?

...
...
...

Cos we dont eat with our hands which will help us 'feel' for and sieve out the fishbones :)

Actually our dear Prof Henry Tan who was once my Anatomy tutor taught us more cools stuff. He said that it is more dangerous to have a new battery stuffed up the nostrils cos the saline environment actually completes the electrical circuit!

Photobucket
Us at Krithika's restaurant. It was so coincidental that i was trying to contact her to no avail and Gab spotted her in her red Honda Jazz at the traffic junction!

Abu treated us to Kulfi and some Indian desserts cos we treated him to dinner :)

Photobucket
Kulfi (Indian Ice cream)

Photobucket
Indian desserts that are too sweet for my liking! But Gab likes them :)

Day 2 - Chilli Crab at Forture Seafood
I didnt take photos of the food cos the food prob felt flattered enough tt 3 other cameras were aleady snapping away. So i took a picture of the mantou which was least popular with the photographers!

Photobucket
I prefer plain steamed mantou to those deep fried ones :)

----------

Lovely Saturday
I started my day earlier than expected and i found myself at borders at 9+am. Since the start of paeds and my Aunt's pregnancy, i'm getting more acquainted with kiddy things and looking at the great variety of things.. i'm also convinced that the kids industry is rather lucrative. As a parent, i'm sure u want the best for ur child right?

The mistake i made today was forgetting to bring my umbrella and i was stranded at paragon for really long. But i got to try canale which the whole world has been talking abt :)

PhotobucketPhotobucket

I'd say Canale is insanely famous for their macaroons. But they're too sweet for my liking. I totally heart their rose tea though.. They're really generous with their rose buds :)

I should try their cakes some day! They look pretty don't they?

So what did i buy today?
Despite the desruptive rain, i think i found enough things today for me to call it fruitful :)
Photobucket
I couldnt find a bk i like enough and i thought flash cards are qt good idea cos they occupy less space too :) A is for apple and i like the green apple a lot :)
I bought a eeyore cos Marc says using my bday present in the prev pic is very bad idea cos children tend to send toys into their mouths and i wont want a slimey bear :)

I think the buy of the day has to be this mini tote bag.. the strap for carrying is longer than my current crabby bag which i cant sling over my shoulder :)

Photobucket
This is my KKH locker with my Crabby bag hung in it. I love the size of the locker!
This is only the top compartment!

Photobucket
This is the bottom compartment where i keep my stash of raisins! Since i'm not a fan of sweet things u may ask what the raisins are for :)

Interestingly, it is used to test for pincer grip of children and it's a test of fine motor skills :) Quite cute right?

I'm short of one more thing i can think of for my paeds kit which is a toy car.. Does anyone want to donate? I saw so many toy cars at toysrus and i really dont know which one will really appeal to kids.

Y'know.. i realised what we like might not be what kids like too :) If only i have a nephew or niece i can bring to a toy shop to make sure i pick the most popular one :) haha...

Alright.. have a restful wkend everybody!

Paediatrics

Although it didnt feel like i started paeds on a right foot today (cos the day was so long and i had to give tuition too so i felt incredibly tired at the end of the day), i was happified quite instantaneously when i started to assemble my paediatrics kit :)

Photobucket

I have winnie the pooh stickers for girls and spiderman stickers for boys! I also changed my stethoscope's diaphragm to paediatric head too :) It's now so cute and small :)

I think i have too little toys to interest the kids.. maybe i will slowly expand :) Anyone has any suggestions? I need to get raisins too :)

On a random note, i saw the durian tree beside my church flowering.. :) Bet some of u havent seen them before! So here u go.. try to recognise them next time! I recognise durian trees by their leaves and not their flowers though :)

Photobucket

I saw these mini n pretty yellow flowers outside my church :) Hope u like them too.

Photobucket

Have a good wk ahead everybody! I'm hoping for an exciting one for myself too! :)

End of Posting

I am so glad that the Emed EOPT is over... What a relief!

Though i must say the mcq killed me so bad, but at least the viva was ok :)

Interestingly, it ended with the examiner saying,"please leave the room looking sad, cos i'm supposed to be a very nasty person."

In retrospect, i think Emed's been quite fun. I think i learnt a lot and i am so convinced that ecgs can actually tell u a lot! :) It's good to feel a bit wiser.

My new clinical rotation -paeds- will begin in less than 32 hrs... I'm looking forward to learning new things and seeing children, but i'm really hoping it wont be as xiong as how the seniors have described. More xiong than gen med... hard to imagine.

So, Monday shall be new beginning...
Photobucket

I finally have time to upload the photo of the flower bud i'm waiting so anxiously for to bloom :) I hope it'll be pretty!

When i uploaded this photo, i realised i havent been playing with my camera for some time.. for the whole Emed posting in fact! :(

Hope i will have opportunity to use it soon.

I wonder if he likes it! :)

Anyway, his hair has grown already! Now he no longer looks like a chihuahua :)

Humbling

Today's back to SGH after a day of ambulance run and after i talked to gab, i totally agree with what he said... that the ambulance attachment was a humbling experience.

I wonder how many of those who have done emed will agree with us, cos i do know of people who think it is a waste of time! My ambulance runs were very fruitful experiences because

(1) I saw patients in an acute setting which is different from seeing them at the emergency department. Well, of cos not all cases were deserving of the ambulance call, but i thought it was amazing how much better or worse patients can become within a short timespan of the transport from home to hospital. It's a side of medicine i have not seen.

Also, there are patients who never made it to the doors of A&E and we actually have a biased view of what's really taking the lives of people everyday.

(2) I learnt that doctors no longer claim monopoly over the medical knowledge, cos some paramedics i met clearly knew their stuff. Although they may not have the academic knowledge of the basis of diseases, what they know abt approach to symptoms are similar to what we're learning! For example, we learn that in approach to giddiness, we must first find out if it is vertiginous and non-vertiginous and i saw this clearly demonstrated!

Also, they do not blindly excute SOB protocol when a patient is breathless cos they know that there is such a thing as cardiac asthma and giving ventolin can ppt tachycardia and will further compromise the tissue perfusion of an ischaemic heart.
Amazing right?

(3) I learnt how we, as doctors, should not take paramedics for granted. I have seen how bad the attitude of some hospital staff can be when they receive the patients from the paramedics and i shall rmbr that i will not do the same in future. Of course i might not be able to say the same for ALL paramedics, cos i was fortunate that my paramedics is quite gd and this is what he did:
I had a case of a very minor knife cut of the finger. The patient's response was clearly disproportional to the injury cos she was wailing, screaming and clearly in distress (to the extent that all of us thought the wrapped cloth around her finger was a severed finger). The paramedic calmed her down and addressed all her ICE (ideas, concerns and expectations) patiently. I asked him why he even bothered and his reply was he did it for the benefit of the doctors and other hospital staff. In a way, it is a thankless job, cos the doctor wont even know the before status of this patient and he wont even be grateful that the patient is now more 'stable'.

(4) I learnt that experience can really teach a lot. These paramedics have not been taught the theory of most of the things they deal with daily. I must say what most of them have is common sense which i feel that studious us lack very often. Experience can teach u to make better decisions, know exactly what should be done next and also pre-empt problems. In a practical sense, transporting patients itself is rather challenging cos u have to know what is the safest and most effective way to carry the patient in different home environment.

(5) I also learnt the importance of communication. Yesterday i saw a pt whom we suspect collided into the railings on the expressway on purpose. Cos he did not want to be saved and said he 'wanted to die'. Throughout the whole process till he was safely transferred to hospital bed, i realised that he was only willing to talk to the paramedic and not even the doctor! (Perhaps it is a separate issue, cos the doctor was super impatient with him and developed a temper)

I'm actually qt amazed by how the paramedic can switch from 'child mode', to 'crying woman in great distress mode' and then to 'grandma/grandpa mode' very quickly. The way things are communicated transcends the difference in age, race, mental and emotional state.

(6) On a minor note, i think not everyone gets to sit in the ambulance or even wishes to have the opportunity to in the first place. It's quite a memorable experience holding on the railings to keep ur balance when the ambulance is moving at high speed. Also, i was allowed to report into the walkie talkie like thing saying,"alpha xxx, alpha xxx, arrive at hotel 5. over" I think they were quite amused by how happy/excited i was :)

Alright, i hope i managed to convince those who have not done emed to look forward to their ambulance run. Also, if u havent figured out by now, this experience have been humbling cos i learnt that as doctors we should not assume we know the most, or the only ones with medical knowledge. We should always rmbr that a great deal could have been done for a patient u're seeing now and we should never take others for granted.

One paramedic trainee said,"Some doctors are quite yaya banana." haha..

So, hopefully everyone can work in harmony to provide excellent patient care in future :) Paramedics are called Para-medics for a reason :) agree?
